HAPPINESS: A Secret to Happiness
Seems life is filled with happiness and then unhappiness. Why, even feeling empty, is something we want to avoid.
Did you ever think that feeling happy or unhappy is irrelevant? Perhaps this IS the secret to happiness.
The Buddhist way teaches us to live in a state of mindfulness, where being one way or another is not sought. Rather to be in the moment, is the happy state.
This way you are not outside of events, shifting in and out of each reaction. Rather you exist in a constant state of steadiness, firmly rooted in the energy of everything.
This in my opinion is the secret to happiness, to live in the now, accepting each moment, each experience as good. Let me explain.
Let’s say you wake up today feeling empty inside. You have no energy or enthusiasm for anything. You feel a bit foggy mentally.
In Western ways of thinking you would construe this to be, “BAD, undesirable, something to avoid, get rid of, etc.”
In Eastern thought this would be simply another state of being, good in its essence of now. The only thing bad about it might be a lack of energy, which could quickly be rectified with rest, or exercise, depending on your state of health.
It is EASY to be HAPPY if you concentrate on being in the now. The way to be in the now is to focus on your how you feel in your body.
Here are three ways to feel your body.
1. Drink a glass of water and focus on how the water feels as it trickles down your throat.
2. Take a walk and focus on the feeling of your feet pushing against the ground.
3. Rub the palms of your hands together focusing on the feeling of the skin touching the skin.
Each of these exercises is a way to bring yourself back to the moment, to the exact feeling of connection with self, identity and presence.
Being present is the secret of happiness.
Next time you feel unhappy, stuck, lost or alone, focus on something physical. You are certain to shift your mood from lack luster to pretty decent, perhaps just stepping over the edge to happy.
