Swedenborg Heaven and Hell. Explore the spirit world through the work of Emanuel Swedenborg.
A reader commented on my last article about “Adventures in the Afterlife,” suggesting I take a look at Swedenborg’s work. Here is a short overview of what I discovered.
Have you ever soul traveled? If so, what did you encounter? Did you have the same experiences as Swedenborg describes in his book, “Heaven and Hell”?
Each time I have brought in a soul from the otherside through mediumship I have gained a tiny glimpse of what the spirit world is like.
From what I have discovered in these sessions the spiritual world reflects a state of consciousness. A soul who believes in Heaven and Hell, will experience a spirit world which reflects this.
Most of the souls I have brought in show me they are living in an earth like place, bound by the rules of a physical reality, albeit less dense, more energy based.
I often see houses, gardens, trees, animals, other people around them. However, some souls explain soon they will be “graduating” to a less physical, more “energy” world, not bound by the three dimensional laws of an earth reality.
This article will explore the 18th century scientist Emanuel Swedenborg‘s findings from his soul traveling in the spirit world.
Emanuel Swedenborg’s Spiritual Odyssey: A Summary of “Heaven and Hell”
Between 1748 and 1772, Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish scientist turned mystic, embarked on an extraordinary spiritual journey that would profoundly influence his theological writings.
During these three decades, Swedenborg claimed to have engaged in extensive soul traveling between the physical world and the spirit realm, both in waking states and through dreams.
His most significant work from this period, “Heaven and Hell” (1758), provides a comprehensive view of his spiritual revelations and remains a cornerstone of his theological legacy.
“Heaven and Hell” is a detailed exploration of the afterlife based on Swedenborg’s purported spiritual experiences. You can buy this book HERE on Amazon. (Below I will leave a free audio-book version of it and other resources from youtube.com.)
The book is divided into several sections, each addressing different aspects of the spiritual realm. Swedenborg’s accounts are presented as firsthand observations and conversations with spiritual beings, including angels and spirits, offering a unique perspective on the nature of the afterlife and divine order.
Heaven and Hell Book Summary
The book begins with a description of Heaven, which Swedenborg presents as a realm of profound peace and joy. According to Swedenborg, Heaven is not a single, uniform place but rather a complex, hierarchical structure where inhabitants live in communities that reflect their spiritual affinities.
The closer one’s life is to divine love and wisdom, the higher their place in Heaven. Swedenborg describes Heaven as a place where the divine presence is palpable, and the joy experienced by its residents is directly proportional to their alignment with divine will and their acts of charity.
In contrast, Swedenborg depicts Hell as a realm of suffering and disorder, where individuals who have led lives contrary to divine principles are confined.
Hell, according to Swedenborg, is not a place of eternal punishment but a state of existence where individuals experience the consequences of their own actions and choices.
The nature of Hell is portrayed as chaotic and discordant, reflecting the spiritual state of its inhabitants who are disconnected from divine love and truth.
Swedenborg’s depiction of the spiritual world includes a detailed examination of the intermediate state between death and the final judgment.
He describes how souls undergo a process of spiritual purification and revelation, where their true nature is revealed and they are gradually led to their final destination in either Heaven or Hell.
This intermediate state serves as a period of self-discovery and transformation, where individuals come to understand the consequences of their earthly lives and align themselves with their ultimate spiritual destiny.
One of the significant contributions of “Heaven and Hell” is Swedenborg’s concept of the correspondence between the physical and spiritual worlds. He suggests that natural phenomena and objects are symbolic representations of spiritual truths.
For example, the structure and order of Heaven are seen as reflections of divine order, and the experiences of its inhabitants symbolize deeper spiritual realities.
This idea of correspondence underscores the interconnectedness of the physical and spiritual realms, emphasizing that understanding one can lead to insights into the other.
Overall, “Heaven and Hell” presents a detailed and vivid account of Swedenborg’s vision of the afterlife, characterized by a structured and moralistic view of spiritual existence.
The book reflects his belief in a universe governed by divine order, where moral and spiritual development determines one’s eternal destiny.
Swedenborg’s writings continue to influence spiritual thought and offer a unique perspective on the nature of Heaven, Hell, and the afterlife, rooted in his extensive spiritual experiences and revelations.
