Onion for Colds. The sulfur in onions can improve immune function to fight colds.
Onion for Colds: Does Onion Help Fight Flu?
Quick answer: YES!
Sunday night I was at dinner with a friend for her birthday. She had been out of it for a few days with an upper respiratory virus of sorts. I had the beginning of a sore throat.
When our Hummus appetizer platter arrived there were some raw onions on it. I had a psychic insight, “Onions can help fight the flu and colds.”
We all promptly dove into them eating them raw.
Today I remembered saying this, so looked it up to see if there was any credibility to it. Indeed, I immediately found the following.
Onion for Colds: Evidence
“Native Americans used them to ward off the common cold and flu. In fact, the World Health Organization has even recognized the onion for its ability to help relieve flu symptoms including coughs, congestion, respiratory infections and bronchitis.” Taken from http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/onion-flu-remedy/
So now the question remained how to use onions to heal viruses.
Dr. Andrew Weil says not much research has been done in this area. However, does suggest that since Garlic has been shown to have antibiotic effects the onion probably does as well. When one uses garlic, it needs to be eaten raw, mixed into food.
The Global Healing Center states “Onions are high in sulfuric compounds such as thiosulfinates, sulfoxides, and other odorous cysteine sulfoxides. ”
Thiosulfinates have been shown in research to kill harmful organisms, so can act as a great immune boosting food.
As well, “Onions are also extremely high in the antioxidant quercetin.” Quercetin is an anti oxidant which as well can help to boost the immune system.
I believe onions need to be eaten fresh and raw to get the full benefit of them in their disease fighting power. That is when the sulfuric compounds are highest and can eradicate and fight disease.
It was easy to find scientific evidence that sulfur can help fight bacterial and virus infections and boosts the immune system.
There is an article on Dr. Mercola’s website fascinating on this subject. Dr. Stephanie Seneff talks about sulfur and its effects on health here: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/09/17/stephanie-seneff-on-sulfur.aspx
